PROGRAM

This Sweet Trip starts on friday afternoon 25th april 2024 at Hotel Novotel Nancy Ouest. Everyone will take his room, then dinner will be waiting for you. For late evening, the hotel bar will be open.

On Saturday 26th April, drive to the small village of Crehange at the old Faulquemont mine to discover a little-known automobile museum: the Leon-Joseph Madeline automobile conservatory. This conservatory is a remarkable place for the conservation of a double heritage: The automobile heritage and the real estate heritage of the old Faulquemont mine, created by the architect Léon -Joseph Madeline, whose most surprising piece remained the glass roof, former juvenile call room. You will be able to see a permanent collection of around a hundred vehicles, a specialized documentation room (technical magazines and video room), a reproduction of a workshop from yesteryear and a nod to the building’s mining past.

Then, you will take the direction of the city of Saint Avold for lunch in a local restaurant.

After the meal, you will head to the Lorraine American Cemetery in Saint Avold. With 10,489 graves, it is the American cemetery in Europe with the most soldiers who died during the Second World War. Established to accommodate the remains of American victims of the Second World War, most of whom died during the conquest of the Rhine, it covers an area of forty-six hectares divided into nine symmetrical parts. As in many military cemeteries, the graves vary depending on the religion of the soldiers buried there. The steles are made of marble extracted from the Lasa quarries in Tuscany. A belvedere decorated with a bald eagle (or Eagle), symbol of the United States, as well as a memorial, are also located within the cemetery grounds. The memorial chapel, 20.40 meters high and built in neoclassical style, houses four monumental statues. The largest of them represents an allegory of American youth lost in combat and surrounded by King David, the Roman Emperor Constantine, King Arthur and George Washington. An immense statue of Saint Nabor, patron protector of the town of Saint-Avold, adorns its exterior facade and dominates the entire cemetery.

In the late afternoon, return to the hotel Novotel Nancy Ouest. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant. For the evening, the bar is at your disposal for a discussion over a drink.

On sunday 27th April, drive to the Foret de Haye leisure park in Velaine en Haye to discover the Lorraine automobile museum. This Museum permanently exhibits around 80 cars, mainly dating from the years 1900 to 1980. The cars belong to members of the association, its content evolves regularly, and each visit allows you to discover new models. The Museum also exhibits some 2-wheelers, motorcycles and mopeds, as well as an original and very complete collection of oilers. Garage elements, plaques and posters help decorate the building. The museum also offers a bar area as well as a small shop where you will find miniatures.

Afterwards, the meal will be taken in a local restaurant very close to the museum.

After the meal, you will take the small roads of the region towards the hill of Sion for a quick stop.

Finally, you will drive towards the Neuves Maisons mines. Set off to discover the Neuves-Maisons iron mine. On the hill of the Hayes massif, below the forest, enter with a guide into real 19th century galleries, whose 150th anniversary was celebrated in 2024, for a visit where we will alternate explanations of the history of miners and iron with simple practical exercises to better understand the work of these pioneers of the industrial revolution. The mine, located in the heart of the world’s second largest reserve of iron, became the largest mine in the southern iron basin around Nancy, which included 33. Connected to the factory below, by a railway line which can still be taken on foot or by bike over 4.5 kilometers, it supplied the seven blast furnaces of Neuves-Maisons for a century. this set was one of the driving forces of the industrial revolution, which transformed ore into steel or cast iron. Symbol of this entire revolution, the Eiffel Tower whose ore comes from this mine, before being forged in Pompey and shipped to Paris.

In the late afternoon, return to the hotel Novotel Nancy Ouest. Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant. For the evening, the bar is at your disposal for a discussion over a drink.
